AGH Lake House: Primary Bathroom

AGH Lake House: Primary Bedroom Tour

A look into the process of designing our primary bathroom.

Today, we’re giving you an in-depth tour of our primary bathroom at the AGH Lake House.

As with any bathroom we work on, there’s nothing better than when the result is akin to a spa-like-space. With the room being such a central point of our day-to-day, I prioritized pieces that are made as much for beauty as they are for practicality. I loved mixing contemporary, modern traditional details in this space.

Local designer and our landlord, Bonnie Wittman, chose a bunch of foundational products from Lowe’s and Wayfair in this space, and the selections mix and work together beautifully, making it easy to add in my styling favorites.

Bonnie chose a grey porcelain tile with a marble finish. Next was the vanity, and she went with a clean, transitional 48” single-sink vanity with a natural carrera marble top. I think that one of my favorite elements in this space is the countertop. It’s a classic, timeless feature and I love how much it elevates our bathroom. We didn’t want the room to feel too cool between the grey tile and vanity, so she chose a satin brass finish for the faucet to bring in a good tone contrast. She also went with really sleek, contemporary pulls to complement the fixtures.

The next thing was the light, and Bonnie went with a sleek, modern-meets-contemporary vanity sconce.

These selections paved the way for my mirror selection. I ended up going with two tall mirrors above a single sink, which is an unusual feature, and it’s not something that I would often do, but I love how it creates the illusion of double sinks in a smaller space. The scale is perfect, and I think it adds a more interesting element than one oversized mirror. I love how you can see the entire space in the reflection, too.

When Bill and Bonnie were designing our shower, they went with a fiberglass insert, and although it doesn’t call for a photo tour, it’s clean & new, the perfect size and so functional. I added a matte black rod and rings and hung a textured simple white linen curtain to encapsulate it.

Across from the walk-in shower, Bonnie had a brilliant idea to create a nook where a substantially-sized cabinet could fit, and I know that for the next tenant, this space will provide so much storage space for them. My personal approach to the nook included a floating wood shelf for towels, brass wall hooks, and a bench. The bench and open shelf brought in some extra interest and texture, while tying in the mix of cool and warm color schemes for the space. The bench makes the whole space look warmer and more inviting. It’s great for throwing towels or clothes on, and it’s also become the space where I can put things like shoes on while I’m getting ready. The open shelves above it are perfect for stacking our towels. Underneath the shelf are two brass hooks with a ball at the end- these hold our towels and robes.

I wanted to bring in a subtle rustic element to contrast all of the new, clean fixtures and features, and so I added two checkered jute rugs. I love that it continues to add dimension with its texture and checkered detail that make it feel more special than a typical bath rug.

For the finishing touches, we added beautiful, simple original art from the Lyme Art Association with gold frames, fluted glass countertop storage, and a ceramic glazed vase.

I love all of the linens from Boll & Branch, and added a plush bath towel set to our bathroom. They are not only ultra-soft, but also heavy enough to be absorbent and plush but not too heavy that they take forever to dry.)

Typically in rentals (I’ve lived in plenty), there tends to be a lack of storage, but what I love about the Lake House is just how much storage it has. I might go so far as to say it has more than the AGH Farmhouse, which was double the size. I love all of the thoughtful details Bonnie and Bill took into consideration when designing the space and constructing the walls, like creating recessed walls and taking advantage of every square foot.
