AGH Lake House: Entry/Mudroom

The AGH Lake House: Mudroom

A space for trekking shoes, hanging bags, and storing outdoor accessories

Today we are kicking off the AGH Lake House tour! First up: the mudroom.

We love working on for mudrooms for our clients, so designing our new one with local designer (and our landlord) Bonnie Wittman and her husband Bill as the leads on the project was a fun switch-up! We loved our hard-working mudroom at the AGH Farmhouse, and knew this one would need to function in a similar way- for trekking in shoes covered with the weather’s elements, storing outdoor accessories, and hanging our coats and bags.

The mudroom is the entrance to the home, whether entering through our garage or front door, so we wanted to be sure to design it for high traffic functionality. We’ve absolutely loved this room since we’ve moved in, and it’s become such a great landing space. It turned out so functional and beautiful, we couldn’t love it more!

The Closet

One of the first things I knew I wanted in this space was a customized closet that would be able to store all of our things with ease, and the right storage plan would allow for that. I designed our closet using The Container Store’s Elfa products, and installed it prior to move-in with the help of my dad.

For the design, ample coat and shoe storage was top priority. I raised the hanging rod a bit taller than standard height (just enough so that we could still both reach!) in order to ensure we had ample storage for our shoes and outdoor accessories. With an outlet in the lower left side, I slightly shortened the length so that the outlet was still accessible, and centered the system on the wall. An out-of-reach top shelf stores out-of-season outdoor accessories that we don’t need to access regularly, and rotate them with the bottom shelf as the seasons shift.

For the components, I went with white foundational pieces, like the top track and hanging standards that would blend in with the walls. I chose 16”x18” Birch Decor Shelves, and I love that it creates some depth and interest to contrast with the light and bright details throughout the rest of the room, while complementing some of the warmth of the floor. Also, the wood is a bit more forgiving than white with whatever is on the bottom of your shoes!

Uniform sturdy wooden coat hangers, hogla storage baskets for outdoor accessories, and black hooks on the doors finished off the space.

The Walls

My favorite thing about this house is all the details and character, especially on the ceilings. I love the beams and skylight in the mudroom, and it ties together beautifully with the rest of them in the living room, dining room, primary bedroom, and my studio.

Above the bench, we have these large windows that not only let in great natural light but allow us to see the beauty of outside, including views of the lake. With plenty of evergreens that give us enough privacy, we decided not to install any window treatments. We love all of the light that the south-facing windows provide, and also feel that it adds a lot of character to the look that we wouldn’t have with drapery or shades covering them.

The walls were painted Greek Villa by Sherwin Williams in eggshell. Greek Villa is a creamy white that works well in a well lit home. The ceilings are painted a flat ceiling white.

The Flooring

The floors in the mudroom are vinyl. Can you believe it?! Vinyl has come a long way. It’s a smart choice for rental and investment properties thanks to its durability and budget-friendly price range. Bonnie presented us with a few different options, and we were on the same page with the selection of this faux marble tile in a hexagon pattern. The warmth in it adds so much dimension. We couldn’t love it more!

The Details

With a super functional closet, I was able to go really simple in the rest of the room. The Lake House is a sprawling bungalow-style home mostly on one floor, with just my studio on the upper level. With a defined yet open floor plan, you can see almost the entire first floor from the mudroom, so I wanted to keep things uncomplicated and effortless.

I selected a light wood bench with a low back, a vintage rug-turned-pillow, a seagrass floor basket, two layered rugs with muted tones, and two pieces of gold-framed art. A tall fiddle leaf tree brings the outside in.
