How to Transition Your Home For Spring

How to Transition Your Home For Spring

We can’t help but get excited for spring. We’re sharing our solutions to brighten up our spaces and re-set for the season.

The feeling of spring is in full bloom—

—and with each new season comes new inspirations. In the springtime, we’re constantly reminded of the beauty in the process as we watch our natural surroundings unfold. While we love a moody winter aesthetic, tis the season for light and bright. Gone are dark days and long nights, and we’re ready for a refresh of our home to start the winter to spring transition. As the promise of warmer weather approaches, we almost instantly get the itch to start fresh in certain rooms of our homes, taking it from warm and cozy to bright and airy. There’s something about the first signs of spring that make us want to refresh our surroundings and create new moments in our spaces. As we tell the story of each new season in our homes, we consider ways to reflect the natural elements in every corner. And as we create a clean slate post-winterand begin to think about shedding our layers, we can’t help but see our homes in a new light and dream about how we can bring life into each corner.  One of the most common questions we get is, “how to transition your home decor with the season change?”

We’ve gathered up a few simple ways to start bringing in some spring home decor and thus packing away the heavy velvets and knitted throws that kept you cozy over the winter. Here are a few ways to transition your home for spring.

Tip No. 01 | Lighten Up

A foolproof way to go from winter to spring is to lighten things up, literally. Bringing in lighter-weight textiles is a great way to refresh for the new season If you like to change-up your rugs for the season, switch out your heavy wools and shags for lighter rugs, like woven jute or a worn vintage rug. When the weather is hot you don’t want to be walking around on heavy, thick material. We love indoor/outdoor rugs because they’re versatile, can be easily layered, and are easy to clean. This also applies to blankets and throws around the house. We like to use lightweight throws that will still keep us comfortable and cozy without overheating in the warmer months. Switching out throw pillows from time to time is so refreshing, and now is the time to add some bright colors and patterns into your collections. Pack away the boucle throw pillow and opt instead of a light, floral print or a whimsical check pattern.

Fill your home with fresh linen. In your bedroom, try crisp cotton or linen sheets, and pack away that heavy down comforter. Opt instead for a light quilt that isn’t heavy on your body but will provide some warmth in the middle of the night. Swap out heavy winter throws for something lighter, like linen. If you want a more major overhaul, invest in a fresh set of clean white cotton towels. Lightweight towels are bright, natural, and refreshing for your bathrooms and kitchen.

Tip No. 02 | Bring the Green

Introducing some greenery into your home is a nice way to freshen up the space and bring in a sense of growth and life. It’s the perfect transition from winter to spring. Use pots, planters, and bowls to hold greenery, florals, fresh herbs, or produce. Displaying herbs and fresh fruit is not only beautiful, but convenient, especially when so many things are starting to come into season.

Decorating with natural elements creates an open, natural feeling in your home. It’s not just the greenery that creates this feeling but utilize textured pots and woven accessories to your advantage. Light ceramic and classic terracotta are staples of spring home decor styling.

Our Picks For Bringing In Green

I love re-styling different vignettes around my home to bring the feeling of a new season to my space. Adding greenery with an interesting, sculptural shape, coffee table books that bring personality and new hues, and vintage finds to corral objects are a few of my go-to styling tricks. Adding a few fresh-cut flowers is my favorite way to introduce a new season. I’m not a flower expert, but I aim for an organic shape. Spring branches are by far my favorite styling item. I love the organic shape and life they bring to a space. I also just stocked up on citrus and put them in a big, light wood bowl on my dining table. Makes everything feel bright, and I love the color it gives my dining space!

Tip No. 03 | Switch Scents

Bringing fresh scents into your spaces is an instant mood booster and a surefire way to initiate the winter to spring transition inside your home. During cold, winter months, the scent vibe is all about being cozy with stronger smells of cinnamon, vanilla, orange spice, and cedarwood. But in the warmer months, it’s all about bringing smells that elicit thoughts of growth and renewal. We love white gardenia, sea salt, pear, lavender, and fresh herbs.

My favorite way to do a spring refresh in my house is by changing scents. In the winter, I lean towards more woodsy scents and love to change to a brighter, fresh scent for spring! I love opening my windows to let natural light in & light a candle to refresh my home. I also love starting a garden! A good deep house cleaning will really help dive into spring as well.

Tip No. 04 | Clean Up & Clear Out

The easiest way to transition your home decor from winter to spring is not by swapping out what your eye can see, but cleaning out those drawers and closets that are rarely seen by anyone but you. What feels fresher and fuller of life than an orderly closet or pantry? We love to spring clean and there’s a way to do it while also introducing some new décor elements to your home. Utilize boxes, baskets, trays, bowls and jars. These beautiful pieces not only help to organize but they’re pleasing to the eye when you open up a drawer or door to see what’s inside.

Our Picks For Cleaning Up & Clearing Out

I’m very into optimizing outdoor activities no matter what season it is so whenever I’m transitioning to a new season, I like to make sure I have the things I need to get outside and have fun ready to go and accessible. Now that winter has ended and spring is here, I will store my winter supplies out of sight and pack my accessible shelves with warm weather activity necessities. Seeing it all out helps me get excited for new activities and warm weather. I know this isn’t exactly design-related, but I think the takeaway for me is to organize your home in a way that energizes you and makes you excited to participate in each new day.

Tip No. 04 | Change-Up Palette & Material

No matter the season, we love to refresh our homes with pieces and elements that draw from our natural surroundings. While incorporating natural textures is hardly a new idea, we’re always excited to lean into mixing pieces inspired by different eras and influences. When refreshing your styling this spring, don’t shy away from pieces and materials with natural imperfections that lend a lived-in and relaxed feeling to any vignette. Bring the look of our spring mood board into your home by mixing muted natural hues with romantic florals, imperfect time-worn pieces, and layers of decor in textural materials like marble, brass, and stone. Whether your space is big or small, bringing subtle interest to each corner is about the most minor elements. If you’re refreshing your home for spring, consider which vignettes in your home could use a new life, and incorporate a piece with an interesting texture or shape to draw the eye in. And, if you thought you’d never see patterned furniture again, think again! Even if you’re not ready to jump into bold, large-scale prints, subtle prints like small-scale pinstripes on dining chairs and even sofas can go a long way in adding an elevated, thoughtful feeling to a home, big or small.
