Selden Antique: Kids’ Bedroom
A really valid question we get during the design process for a kids-centric spaces is, “How do you design a bedroom for a young child knowing that you want it to grow with them?” It’s a delicate balance and not an easy thing to achieve, nor is there a one-size-fits all approach. However, our advice on this is to select more transitional furniture and inject personality into the space through the layering details like textiles, wall decor, and even rugs and tabletop lighting.
The kids’ room in the Selden Antique features a soft palette in a playful and sophisticated way. We incorporated color through polka dot bedding, woodland wall art, hunter green dressers, and a ceramic table lamp; neutral but playful patterns through a indoor/outdoor gingham rug, floor chair, and checkered shade table lamps; and texture through rattan arch wall mirrors, wall hooks, a woven bedside table, and shelf styling pieces.
Similar to the guest bedroom, this room was teeny tiny so we went vertical with a bunk bed. Since the ceilings were much shorter than one by today’s standards, the construction of the bed was very specific and we needed the bottom bunk to sit nearly flush on the floor so that the child sleeping in the top bunk could sit up and move around comfortably.
We added custom Everhem blackout roman shades with a faint vertical stripe pattern, and decided against drapery in this room with small children.
