What Every Organized Laundry Room Needs
If you have to do laundry, you might as well elevate the experience…
and sometimes creating a beautiful, clutter-free space is all it takes to make a chore feel a little less mundane.
We'll be the first to admit that laundry isn't our favorite activity, but it's an unavoidable part of life, and most of us spend hours a week washing, drying, and folding. Our mission to bring form and function into every room in the home is more than just pretty vignettes, but also applies to the most mundane, everyday moments. And the laundry room is certainly an expression of that sentiment by bringing beauty to a simple, everyday activity with thoughtful details.
When you go through the list of places you want to decorate in the home, the laundry room usually ends up on the back burner. Typically, it's not a space that's designed to be center stage. However, we like it as a place of refuge with clean minimal decor and a functional design. Over the years, we’ve had so much fun designing dreamy laundry rooms for our clients, but even if you don’t have four walls dedicated to the task, you can still streamline your washing routine with a few simple additions. Today, we'll walk you through how to get an organized and beautiful laundry room (no matter how big or small or where it’s located in your home- yes, we’re talking about the basement, too!).
Here are elevated essentials to bring form and function to your laundry space. Read through to gather ideas about how to implement a few of these elements into your own home.
No. 1: Laundry Basket(s)
We can't say this enough: everyone needs baskets in their laundry room.
At AGH, we love canvas laundry bins. These bins are not only beautiful but extremely functional. It's amazing how sometimes getting back to the basics can refresh a space instantly. Even if you don't have a designated space for something under-the-counter, you could still style one or two in any laundry room (big or small) for an update. Plus, who doesn't love the idea of being able to wheel your clean laundry to your closet?
In the laundry room at The AGH Lake House, I have one oversized basket with sewn-in dividers to make sorting a breeze.

No. 2: Accessible Storage
Sometimes you want to hide your clutter, but in a laundry room it's the clutter you need to reach for the most! Start with functional storage solutions to corral laundry and cleaning products, linens, or other miscellaneous items. We also love using a mix of boxes, baskets, trays, and jars to style in shelving or on the countertop, grouping by type.
When space and supplies allow, we also love using woven baskets in laundry spaces. Not only do they bring texture and character into any space, but they will also quickly reduce clutter by becoming home to stray socks, random pocket finds, and if you don't have cabinets in your laundry room - space for detergent and dryer sheets!
Everything in place

No. 3: Countertop Space
Even in smaller spaces, we try to create a countertop surface for laundry rooms. You'll need it to treat, sort, and fold clothes. If you’re thinking about or in the process of building a laundry space, one good go-to layout is using a front-loading washer and dryer and adding a countertop over it.
An alternative option is to consider purchasing a small table (like this or this). Bonus points if it’s a pretty folding table to save space when needed. This type of solution works especially well in basement laundry spaces.
No. 4: Hanging Space
You need a space for hanging your garments that don't go in the dryer! A great place for this is beneath a cabinet or shelf, or on an open wall. An alternative option is adding a foldable drying rack if you don’t have the wall space.

No. 5: Laundry Products
Enhance your laundry experience with upgraded suds and scents. Pretty soaps, laundry fragrances, and candles make the process a bit more enjoyable. Not only do they smell amazing, but the design is so beautiful that they look good left out on the counter, too.

No. 6: Finishing Touches
We love the unexpected touch of artwork in the laundry room. Leaned up against the back of the countertop or styled in a built-in, artwork can elevate the laundry room like nothing else. Is there a correlation between vintage art in the laundry room and being more willing to fold clothes? We think so.
Although it might seem funny to add greenery in a laundry room, we love how a plant or two instantly brings life into utility-focused spaces like these. Whether you opt for real, faux, or a mix, you’ll be surprised at how much it can change the feeling of your space.

Also consider…
Wipeable Surfaces
Wipeable counters and tiled backsplashes always make for easy clean up when dirty laundry is thrown in the room!
Low Maintenance Flooring
We want flooring that isn't afraid to get wet — accidents happen! Also, we like warming up the laundry room with indoor/outdoor rugs, since they are low maintenance. You can literally hose them off!
Good Lighting
If only we can all do laundry by natural light! Unfortunately, the reality is that dream is usually not the case. We not only like to focus on good lighting for functionality, but a pretty light can also work as a beautiful focal point of a room and take the design to the next level.
