Selden Antique: Guest Room

Selden Antique Project: Guest Room

Designing guest spaces is always a fun challenge because although we want them to be neutral enough to accommodate anyone, we also want them to feel warm and inviting. It’s all about balancing masculine and feminine styles, mixing materials, and adding layers of texture.

In the Selden Antique, we designed a guest room we absolutely love. It’s pared-back and minimal but feels lived-in at the same time. In creating this space, we wanted it to feel simple in style but still elevated enough to flow with the rest of the home.

The dimensions of this room are a mere 6’10” x 13’11”. Though we tackled plenty of design dilemmas in this house, this room was by far the most challenging. Our client wanted a true guest room with a proper bed and clothing storage. The layout we landed on allowed us to comfortably fit a full-size bed, a nightstand paired with an ottoman, a chest, and even an armchair with a small side table and floor lamp. Positioning these items any other way would eliminate the chance to fit all of the furniture. We love how it all turned out!

The material palette of this bedroom is set off by a relaxed linen upholstered bed and contrasted with an antique wooden nightstand. A minimal bedding look brings a calming feeling to the space with a crisp white duvet and pillows, and a creamy tan lumbar that ties in with the bed upholstery, ottoman and window treatments. The subtly patterned wool rug grounds the space, adding warmth and texture to the look. One of our favorite details in this space is the funky chair in the corner. It adds so much personality and creates a little reading nook for our client’s guests. The terracotta throw pillows pulled in colors from the rug and incorporated some fun but sophisticated fabrics.

Since there was no overhead lighting, we wanted to provide a few different sources of illumination: a small vintage-inspired lamp on the nightstand, a textural task lamp on the dresser, and a pharmacy floor lamp in the corner next to the armchair and small stool.

The custom roman shades by Everhem and elongated drapery (93” long) draws the eye up, adds visual interest and frames the windows. We went with a sandy tan color for both, as opposed to the creamy white used in the other rooms.
